CLL

In March of 2002 I went to my OB for a pregnancy workup for my third child, Laynie. During this process my white blood count was 32,000 (very high). My OB had me come back in to repeat the test which was also high and referred me to an Hematologist/Oncologist. This is when I was initially diagnosed with CLL - Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia. CLL is not common in 30 something women and because I was pregnant - I was referred to MD Anderson and met the incredible Dr. Michael Keating. He is the guru on CLL! I was on a "wait and see" protocol until after the birth of Laynie. Several months after her birth I returned to see Dr. Keating, after several tests we decided to treat my CLL with chemotherapy. The initial drug helped but my fatigue continued so a second cocktail was tried. I have now been in remission for 4 years (5 in March)! I continue to see Dr. Keating annually and my biggest complaint is fatigue! I hope that anyone diagnosed with a type of cancer will seek the care of a physician at a Research facility like MD Anderson. This is our way of "Fighting Back" and helping Cure Cancer.
